We Are Garrett Heights –

Garrett Heights Elementary / Middle School was founded in 1899 and has served the Lauraville Community of Baltimore City ever since.

In 1895, land was acquired from the Garrett family for a school house, which was build in 1899. The Garrett Heights original school building stood at the top of the steps that climb the hill from Ailsa Avenue. The current building was constructed in 1931 and 1932 and stood a bit apart from the original building.

During the early morning hours of January 1, 1969, the original building caught fire and burned through the night. Damage was so severe the building could not be salvaged. The remains were razed, and a large addition was added. Another addition was added to the school in 1993, creating a cafeteria, teacher’s lounge, and additional classroom space. Garrett Heights celebrated it’s one-hundred-year anniversary in 1999, an occasion marked by a day-long celebration.

“PBL works when the instructor finds the balance between student-centered problem solving and productive struggle, mini-lessons and authentic audiences.”
